History 60 Years In The Making
The First Thessalonian Baptist Church was formed in June 1957 as a Prayer Band by Rev. W. H. Waldon Jr., in his home on Joyland Place. This band consisted of Rev. Waldon, Mrs. Ruther M. Waldon (his wife), Mr. Leon Cruse, Mr. Coatis Flannagan and Mr. Eugene Crawford.
In September 1957, this band, now with a few others, was formed into a Mission. When this Mission outgrew their apartment on Joyland Place, they agreed to organize into a church.
In March 1958, the First Thessalonian Baptist Church was organized and named by Rev. W. H. Waldon Jr.
In November 1958, the church moved to 928 West Fair Street as the First Thessalonian Baptist Church complete with name, title, charter, Pastor, members and one ordained Deacon (the late Dea. Walter Harris).
In October 1967 the Church moved to our present location 637 Joseph E. Boone Blvd. (formerly Simpson Street, Atlanta, Georgia).
Under the leadership of the Church three Pastors, we have continued to make spiritual and physical progress. Under the leadership of our present Pastor, Rev. Leroy Wright, we have continued to make substantial spiritual progress…Bible Study and Sunday School has thrived and continues to provide great Christian instruction for our membership. Our Youth Department continues to grow spiritually providing Christian based activities for our youth. The Youth Choir and Senior Choir have gained much success, and continue to uplift the Lord in songs.
Former pastors of the First Thessalonian Missionary Baptist Church are: Rev. W. H. Waldon, Jr. (founder), and Rev. George A. Jennings.
Under these ministers were devoted Deacons such as Walter Harris, Rev. Will Arnold, Houston C. Denton, Felton Billings, Ulysses Hillman, Joe Gibson, Jimmie Hunter, Ray Floyd, Leon Lewis, Johnny Parham, George Jennings, Alfred Childs, Carliss Robinson, Anthony Billings, and Wendell Wyckoff.
Present Deacons are: Clarence Moore, Sr., and Johnnie Jackson.
In 1993 our Junior Deacons Board was organized which included: DeMarcus Billings, Mario Jennings, Maurice Lewis, Antonio Martin, Thomas Martin, Carnell Tinker and Malcolm Tinker.
